| The watercastle in Unterwittelsbach has existed for a long time. For many years, the public had no access to the castle, which was once owned by the Duke Max. Surely nobody would have cared, if it had not been for “Zither-Maxl” with his world-famous daughter, who started to play an important role in history from 1853: Elisabeth, Empress of Austria, Queen of Hungary, the most beautiful woman of her time.
“Sisi” or “Sissi” is known from history, literature and films.
A color painting by the royal painter Alois Flad, painted in 1841, shows the watercastle in Unterwittelsbach and the royal family with Duke Max and his wife Ludowika with a little girl in the door frame of the castle, this is Sissi. Moreover, the seven-year-old princess Helene and the ten-year-old prince Ludwig look out of the window.

Certainly, Sissi spent many carefree, calm summer days in this castle during her childhood.
Little Sissi’s main pastimes in Unterwittlesbach were riding and playing.
People also say that little Sissi was in the nearby pub with her father. He played the zither, Sisi danced and afterwards she collected money in a hat. Allegedly, she once showed her chambermaid a money-bag and claimed that this was the only money she had ever earned herself.
As part of the exhibitions offered by Aichach and the Regio Augsburg Tourismus Gmbh, the interior of the castle of duke Max and his family is occasionally open to the public.
